Within your jaw like a very complex joint called the temporomandibular joint, also known as a TMJ. Your TMJ is essential for proper mouth movements including chewing and eating foods. However, due to the complex nature of the TMJ, it can be damaged easily. Bruxism, arthritis of the jaw, blunt trauma to your face, heavy you wear over time, and increased stress on your jaw can all lead to TMJ disorders.

Common side effects of TMJ disorders include heightened sensitivity to your jaw, pain, and discomfort, increase swelling, and a failure to fully open and close your mouth. In order to prevent a TMJ disorder, remove bad habits in your life that can be making the symptoms worse, including chewing gum, biting your nails, and eating hard foods.  Furthermore, be aware of any underlying conditions or disorders within your body or mouth that may be contributing to your TMJ disorders.
