Wisdom teeth can cause some complexity for your smile, and many patients are concerned about the status of their wisdom teeth and whether these molars should be removed. Dr. Joseph Fullmer and our team can answer any questions and concerns you have regarding wisdom tooth removal. If you are considering having your wisdom teeth removed, we encourage you to review these frequently asked questions for your personal information.

How many of my teeth need to be removed?
The general guideline is to remove any wisdom teeth that are present in your mouth so that your oral health doesn’t suffer complications in the future. However, not every patient will develop all four wisdom teeth or need to have them extracted, so the number differs per case.

Will I be given anesthesia for the procedure?
We commonly administer anesthesia prior to treatment to ensure you are comfortable, and the two main types of anesthesia available are general and local. You will probably feel groggy and sleepy after receiving general anesthesia, so it’s important you know you have a ride home from the office. You will remain awake and alert with local anesthesia but will still be comfortable. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeon will provide recommendations on which type is best for you.

How long does it take to extract wisdom teeth?
Because treatment time depends on how many wisdom teeth we are extracting during the procedure, there is no guaranteed treatment time for wisdom tooth removal.
